Does this medical transcription program come with a digital foot pedal?

Yes, the course does come with a digital foot pedal.  You will need this to play, rewind and fast forward the dictation file while using your hands to transcribe the medical report.

Is there anything else I will need to purchase besides the medical transcription training?

Yes, you will need to purchase some computer headphones to protect the privacy of the patients when working as an MT.  They do not have to be any specific type as long as they plug into your computer and are comfortable.

We also suggest adding on the medical transcription editing textbook at the time of enrollment or purchasing it later in the training.  It is important to receive training in editing because some doctors will use voice recognition to create a draft report and then have the MT listen to the dictation while proofreading the draft and correcting any errors.

Here is a list of items you will need that are not included in the course:

  • Computer Headphones
  • Medical Transcription Editing Textbook (can be added on to the course)
  • Medical Dictionary (can be added on to the course)
  • A Computer with Internet Access
  • Microsoft Word (If you already have MS Office, then you probably have MS Word).

How long does the MTStat course take to complete?

The MTStat medical transcription program for nurses is self-paced and usually takes nurses about six months to compete.  However, you may take longer to complete the course depending on your schedule and how much time you can devote to your training each week.

You don't want to move through the course too fast because you want to retain what you have learned!

How long have you been in business?

MTStat.com is owned by MTatHome.  This is a sister site to our mtathome.com web site.  MTatHome has been training new MTs since 1997.  We have had the MTStat site since 1997 as well.  The only difference between our two web sites is the MTatHome course is designed more for those that do not have any prior medical knowledge, and the MTStat course is for those that have worked in the healthcare profession such as nurses.

Can the average person really produce 300 lines per hour?

With the right productive tools and a firm grasp of medical terminology, the average person can produce more than 400 lines per hour!

Back when I took typing in high school, the goal was 72 words per minute on a manual typewriter, (yes, it's been awhile). When the class began, none of us knew how to touch-type at all, and we didn't have special training tools like The Keyboarding Module, we had just a simple exercise book.

However, most of us could type 70+ wpm by the end of the year. For typing purposes, a "word" consists of six keystrokes, (five characters and the space bar). 70 words per minute should equal 420 keystrokes.

In medical transcription, a line equals 65 keystrokes. At 70 wpm, the MT produces 6.46 lines per minute, or over 387 lines per hour, assuming she doesn't have to stop every few minutes to look up a term, she is unfamiliar with.

With the proper tools, such as setting up the Productivity Module, an average of 40% of keystrokes is eliminated, increasing productivity to over 540 lines per hour! The 40% average savings assume transcribing for an unknown source. In other words, if you are transcribing for a doctor, you have built a glossary for, (see The Productivity Module page for additional information), you will eliminate a much higher percentage of keystrokes, thereby increasing your productivity even more up to 80%!

Assuming the average of 40%, you only have to reach a typing speed of 52 words per minute to produce over 400 lines per hour. Anyone who is not suffering from a physical handicap can learn to type 52 words per minute.

It's exciting to note that because many medical transcriptionists do not know about productivity tools and scorn typing skills as secondary to their profession, 400 lines per hour are considered incredible productivity for top¬notch MTs.

This will excite the best employers and attract the highest pay.

What if I can't reach the productivity skills necessary for the job placement assistance program?

Don’t worry, if you do the work, you'll reach the goal. If you can't reach 300 lines with 98% accuracy, you're doing something wrong or not doing something right. We'll help you figure out what that is and correct it, and in any case, we'll notice it during assessment testing long before it becomes an issue.

We also allow re-testing.  It is important that you retain what you learn so we do allow students to re-take their tests.  If you do not pass with a qualifying grade, you can do more practice and then re-take the test.

If, for some reason, you just can't reach that level of productivity, you can still find a job. Remember, most employers are used to being contacted by people who can only transcribe 200 lines per hour. Keep in mind that a above 200 looks good to a potential employer.

Can I work from home as a Medical Transcriptionist?

Yes, you can work from home in the medical transcription career field.  However, it does take a certain type of personality.  You must be self-disciplined, organized and self-motivated to be successful when working out of your home office.

It will also require you to have a quiet place to work.  You cannot have a lot of distractions when trying to transcribe medical reports.

There are some MTs that do work on-site; however, the majority of medical transcriptionists (MTs) do work from their home.
