Some training vendors imply that fast typing is not a necessity. This is untrue. You need to type at a speed of at least 70 words per minute, and preferably 80, if you intend to earn good money as a medical transcriptionist. To tell people that they can be successful in a field without being expert in the use of its primary tool is absurd.
If you can touch-type, (and if you can't, you need to learn how before you think about any keyboarding career), you can learn to type at 70+ words per minute. All it takes is the right kind of practice.
While you will increase your typing speed over time simply by typing a great deal, that isn't the fast, effective, efficient way. Practice needs to be both structured and customized if you're going to get quick results.
Your course will come with a typing keyboarding program that will analyze your typing skills.
After it has gathered enough information about your typing, it creates customized practice sessions just for you, based on the kinds of errors you make, the keys you have particular trouble with, and the areas in which you need improvement such as rhythm.
Practice sessions consist of words made up of key combinations that are difficult for you, games that include particular words you tend to stumble over, a rhythm monitor, and "stories" that help you increase your overall speed. The module keeps track of your progression, so you can see exactly how much improvement you've made at any given time.
• 330 personalized lessons, exercises and tests
• Detailed tracking and progress reporting
Some people have actually doubled their typing speed in 3 days after beginning to use this program! The slower you are, the faster you'll see significant improvement. And in the meantime, the practice sessions are fun. Many people run through a practice session as a kind of "depressurization" after study.
Each person is different, of course, but most people who can type 30 words per minute when they begin working with the module are able to type 60 words per minute after a few weeks of one 15minute session per day.
